James Lennie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland but grew up in the Far East; Africa and other countries around the world. He is a retired Chief Engineer but coming from a family that also made telescopes, he became fascinated with Astronomy at a very early age and through that Photography. Getting outstanding photographic masterpieces using Dynamic Auto Painter

Dynamic Auto Painter or DAP for short is a great way to turn an image into something that has been painted or drawn. First you need an image that has good photographic merits. Do any tidying up in Photoshop or similar. With DAP choose a painting style that suits the image and start the processing. There is a facility in DAP to go back to various points in the processing, but for newcomers watch how the “painting” develops and pause it when it gets to a point you like. You can save it and then unpause it to see if it gets even better.

Reload the image used in DAP into Photoshop and layer it on top image used in DAP. Try varying the blending mode and opacity in Photoshop until you get a result you are happy with. DAP can lose some of the detail from the image and blending the images can restore that. Also the original image may be a bit flat, but creating a DAP image and overlaying it with an opacity in the 50-79% range can add great textures and bring out more tones.

Another technique that can be used is making an over saturated HDR image and processing that in DAP to give more vibrant colours that are normally found in some painting styles.
